Animal nuisance ordinances are enforced within the City of North Branch. All dogs over six months of age must be licensed. Dogs are not allowed to run at large at any time and are not allowed off of the owner's premises unless properly leashed. Dog owners are also required to clean up after their pets. Frequent loud barking, howling, or yelping is prohibited. Annual dog licenses cost $10 and may be obtained from the Police Department at City Hall.
To make a complaint regarding an animal or to report a lost or found pet, please call Chisago County dispatch at 651-257-4100. If you reported a lost pet and it is found, please call Chisago County dispatch and let them know.
The City of North Branch contracts with Tammy Gimpl of Gratitude Farms for animal impoundment and boarding services. Stray dogs and dogs found running at large will be impounded. To locate a pet that has been picked up by animal control, please contact Tammy Gimpl at 763-331-2275. Animal impoundment and boarding fees are set by the North Branch City Council and must be paid to animal control prior to animals being released. The current impoundment and boarding fees are:
- Animal Impound fee (includes administrative/impound and pick-up) - $85.00/per animal
- Animal Kennel Boarding - $25.00/day
Cats will not be impounded by the North Branch Police Department or by animal control. If you need assistance with a stray or loose cat, please contact your local humane society.
Sec. 6-1. Animals at large
No animals shall be permitted to run at large within the city limits. All animals caught running at large shall be reported to the police who shall in turn notify animal control.
Sec 6-29 Number Of Dogs And Cats
No person or persons shall keep more than three adult dogs and/or three adult cats at a premises without first obtaining a kennel license.
Sec 6-66 Restraint
The owner of any dog with the city shall cause such animal to be restrained by leash, chain, or cord of sufficient strength, or electronic device to effectively restrain and control such animal, and in the custody of a person capable of adequately controlling such animal at all times when such animal is in or upon a public place.
Sec 6-67 Nuisances
It shall be unlawful for any person to keep an animal that causes annoyance or disturbance to persons or the neighborhood by yapping, wailing, barking, howling, or crying for a continuous period of 10 minutes or longer. Such yapping, wailing, barking, howling, or crying must also be audible off of the owner’s or caretaker’s premises.
Sec 6-76 Littler Cleanup
The owner of any dog or any person having the custody or control of any dog shall be responsible for cleaning up any feces of the animal and disposing of such feces in a sanitary manner.
