Election Information
The City of North Branch follows the election rules and
guidelines outlined in the Minnesota Election Laws. The information below is
about elections, registering to vote, absentee voting, serving as an
election judge, and polling places. If you have other questions that are not

Information
What are the eligibility requirements for a candidate for City office?
Candidates for office must be:
- Eligible to vote,
- At least 21 years of age on assuming office, and
- A resident of the City of North Branch for at least 30
days before the election
How do eligible candidates file for City office?
Candidate for City office must:
- File at the
City Clerk's Office

- Pay a $2.00 filing fee at the time of filing, and
- File during the filing period,
which is not more than 84 days before the Primary
and closes 70 days before the Primary
8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday.

Voter Information
Where do I vote?
North Branch is divided into two precincts:
- NORTH PRECINCT:
If you live NORTH of State Highway 95, you vote at
United Methodist Church
6500 Main Street
- SOUTH PRECINCT:
If you live SOUTH of State Highway 95, you vote at the
Chisago County Senior Center,
38790 - 6th Avenue.
The Senior Center is located on the ground floor of the
new Uptown Maple Commons senior apartment building.
When are the polling places open?
Registered voters may cast their vote at the North Branch
polling places
from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on election days.
Who is eligible to vote?
You are eligible to vote if, at the time of the election,
you:
- Are a citizen of the United States,
- Have been a resident of the State of Minnesota for at least 20 days,
and
- Are 18 years of age or older on the day of the election.
Who is not eligible to vote?
You are not eligible to vote if, at the time of the
election, you:
- Have been convicted of treason or
of any felony and your civil rights have not been restored,
- Are under the guardianship of another person, or
- Have been found by a court of law to be legally incompetent.

Voter Registration
Who needs to register?
You must register to vote if you:
- Have never registered to vote,
- Have moved since you last registered,
- Have changed your name since you last registered, or
- Have not voted at least once in the last four years.
How do I register on Election Day?
If you are not registered to vote or
need to update your registration information, you may do so at your local
polling location on Election Day as long as you can provide proof of
residence.
To register at your polling place on
Election Day, you must bring one of the following with your current
name and address to verify your residence to the precinct:
- A valid Minnesota driver's license or learner's permit,
Minnesota ID card, or receipt for any of these
- A valid student ID card including your
photo, if your college has provided a student housing list to election
officials
- A Tribal ID card that contains your
picture and signature
- A valid registration in the same
precinct under a different name or address
- A notice of late registration sent to
you by your county auditor or city clerk
- A voter
registered in the same precinct as you who can confirm your address with
a signed oath
- Both 1) a photo ID from the list below,
and 2) a current bill from the list below with your current name and
address in the precinct

How do I pre-register?
Eligible voters may register to vote by completing a Voter
Registration Card available at County Offices, and City Hall, or on the
Secretary of State's website
www.sos.state.mn.us/index.aspx?page=20
No ID is required to pre-register in the State of
Minnesota.
Voter pre-registration is permitted in Minnesota until 20
days before an election. For the September 14 Primary Election, you must be
pre-registered by August 24; and for the November 2 General Election, you
must be pre-registered by October 12, 2004.

Voting by Absentee
Ballot
To vote by absentee ballot, either by mail or in person, you
must be eligible to vote and have a valid reason for voting by absentee
ballot. The four approved reasons are:
- Absence from precinct on Election Day;
- Illness or disability;
- Religious discipline or observance; or
- Service as an election judge in another precinct.
Can I vote absentee BY MAIL?
Please allow at least seven (7) days to complete the
process of
voting absentee by mail as described below:
- Obtain and complete the absentee ballot application. You can obtain
the application from the Chisago County Auditor 651-213-8500.
You may request an absentee ballot at any time; ballots are available
46
days before the election.
- The absentee ballot will be mailed to the address that you specify on
the application.
- Return the completed ballot by mail

Special Considerations For Voting By Mail:
- If you are not registered at your address, voter registration
materials will be included when the County Auditor mails the absentee
ballot to you.
- FOLLOW ALL DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY. Absentee ballots will not be accepted
if the ballot and associated materials are not completed properly.
- Absentee ballots will NOT be accepted at the polling place on Election
Day.
- Only an agent designated by the voter may deliver the voter's absentee
ballot to the Chisago County Auditor before 3:00 p.m. on Election Day.
Can I vote absentee IN PERSON?
You may vote absentee in person at the
Chisago County Auditor's Office,
313 North Main Street,
Center City, MN 55012
during the 46 days preceding the election.
You may complete the absentee ballot application, register
to vote (with valid ID), and cast the absentee ballot during a single visit
to the Auditor's office.
Hours for absentee voting at the Auditor's office are:
Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Saturday prior to Election Day 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Monday prior to Election Day 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

How to become an
Election Judge
The City is always looking for additional election judges to
assist the voters on Election Day. To serve as an election judge, you must be:
- Eligible to vote,
- Able to read, write, and speak English, and
- Attend a training class.
